If Dead Space had the scariest menu ever, then Fallout 3 has the epicest.
Here's a short video with the theme music and all.
Before I confuse everyone(or anyone, since most people skip the gaming posts) THIS is how the menus is like.
1)Instead of showing the game publisher/developer in the usual manner, it's all shown as though in a projector slide.
2)Then the theme music comes on
3) then this picture comes on
4)epic
Here's a video that basically says EVERYTHING below, so YOU don't have to read!
This is basically what happened in the universe of Fallout 3.
Instead of the cold war ending, it continues for hundreds of years until the entire world is fully geared up. The UN disbands and suddenly China invades Alaska. After a while, the nuclear missiles start flying and the world goes bye bye.
But the humans don't go bye bye. The richer ones in the Washington D.C.(where the nukes hit the hardest) invested in underground protective Vaults. So while the rest of the world got nuked and had to deal with living in a wasteland, some of them were protected in high tech Vaults.
And the character you play lived in a Vault his whole life. Something happens and you have to leave the Vault. After that it's all about surviving in the Wasteland that is Washington DC.
There's a few problems with Fallout 3.
The only way to enjoy it is by wasting half a day EVERY day playing it.
The Wasteland is gigantic and all you need to do is walk 1 minute in any direction, you're sure to find something interesting like a town built around an undetonated atomic bomb, a village converted into a minefield, or a historic Washington DC landmark that has been converted by survivors for some logical purpose.
The combat isn't really combat. Like I mentioned before, Oblivion sucked at handling combat and Fallout 3 plays EXACTLY like Oblivion but with high tech weapons. Luckily though, they introduced a cool cinematic combat system called VATS. Basically, you tap the VATS button, the whole game pauses, you get to choose which limb you want to shoot(based on the odds of you hitting) and everything is done in a slow motion movie dramatic movie style thing. It doesn't really make sense, but it saves time and it's cool to see a bullet hit an eyeball in slow motion.
Most of it doesn't make sense. This is a game that's trying to be realistic. But eating food and sleeping doesn't cure gunshot wounds in real life. It does in Fallout 3 though. Much like Oblivion if you ask me. Still, it makes the game easier to manage.
The story is decent. It's no Bioshock, but I can't say for certain. Most people who have finished the game say that it's really good BUT once you finish playing through the main story the game ends and you can't explore the Wasteland and do all those side quests. So I'm going to take my time.
What really grabs me is the setting. They really made it look depressing. Like I was in this house and I found the skeleton of a kid on his bed. It was obvious that a nuclear blast killed him in his sleep.
Enough. It's a good game, it's different from the rest. But not that much different from Oblivion!
