This entire post is dedicated to Bioshock. So go away if you have no interest in games or 'Atlas Shrugged'.
Bioshock hurts my eyes. But thank God it's over. In Bioshock, the Big Daddies protect the Little Sisters.
Guess which one's the Big Daddy...
And the Little Sisters go around and collect genetic material from dead bodies.
At one point, you get transformed into a big daddy. Awesome, but it could have been better. For one, you don't wear Big Daddy gloves, so your hands still look regular. And because of that, you don't get the Big Daddy Rivet gun or Drill(pictured).
When I played this game on PC, I did everything the good way. You see, the Little Sisters aren't as human as they look. They're brainwashed and implanted with weird stuff. They look and sound like little girls, but they go around talking about angels (dead bodies) and weird things. And when someone attacks a Little Sister, they scream for their Big daddy and then start saying things like "Kill him Mister Bubbles, kill him!" (Yeah, they call the Bid daddy "Mr. Bubbles" for some reason).
On the PC, I rescued all the Little Sisters by 'exorcising' them, which returned them to regular kids. But on my xbox, I harvested each and everyone of them, leaving a slug-like thing behind.
It made the game a whole lot more easier. But the ending was horrible. Instead of starting a new life with the Little Sisters in the underwater city of Rapture, you devastate the world after hijacking a submarine containing nuclear missiles.
Still. Both endings were well written. Bioshock 2 will be out soon and rumors are circulating about it being set in Atlantis. But since the writter of Bioshock 1 left the company, I doubt it'll be as good.
There's more to Bioshock than Big Daddies and Little Sisters. Since most of ya won't play this game, I'm going to summarize the amazing story of Bioshock here. If you plan to, then skip the paragraph written in RED.
The game starts with the player sitting in a plane looking at a wrapped up gift with a note on it. Then the player thinks to himself. "they told me, "Son, you special". They were right". The screen blacks out and in the blackness you hear the scream of the passengers on the plane as it crashes into the sea. You wake up drowning in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. You're the only survivor of the plane crash. When you float to the surface, you see a massive light house. In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean? Strange eh? Inside the light house is a Bathysphere. Seeing no other choice, you enter it. It begins to descend the ocean. When a voice speaks over the radio-
I am Andrew Ryan and I am here to ask you a question:
Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?
No, says the man in Washington; it belongs to the poor.
No, says the man in the Vatican; it belongs to God.
No, says the man in Moscow; it belongs to everyone.
I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something
different. I chose the impossible. I chose...
That guy on the radio, Andrew Ryan, built the perfect City and he built it underwater.
All his principles are based on Ayn Rand's book, Atlas Shrugged. Basically, in his own words-
'I don't believe in any God. I believe there is something greater than man; The Great Chain. It's beyond the control of any man or government. And if anyone tells you otherwise, he either has a hand in your pocket, or a pistol to your neck'.
In a nutshell, The city of Rapture was filled with the best scientists, artists, engineers, philosophers, inventors, etc. And since only the best of the best were allowed to reside in Rapture, there wasn't any crime. Everyone was allowed to flourish without having to pay taxes (most governments, it belongs to the poor), without fear of being condemned(Religion, it belongs to God), and without worrying about equality(Communism, it belongs to everyone).
As soon as you arrive at Rapture, you realize the city is in ruins. Nearly everyone is genetically modified and addicted to keeping themselves that way by harvesting little sisters. Somebody on a walkie talkie helps you out though, His name is Atlas(a tribute to the influence Atlas Shrugged has over the city of Rapture). He needs your help. His family is trapped somewhere in the city. He's one of the sane people left in Rapture and he wants to get his family out. Atlas is an Irishman with a strong accent. He uses phrases like 'Would you kindly...' every time he's giving you advice.
As you play through the well paced campaign, you eventually encounter a lot of Big daddies and Little sisters. You can choose to avoid them, but you'll most likely die if you do.
You, just like the citizens of Rapture begin genetically modifying yourself. Harvesting Little Sisters allows you to use a formula called ADAM to obtain more powerful gene-mods.
The City of Rapture is in chaos. Apparently this smuggler called Frank Fontaine began to be more influential than Andrew Ryan. Andrew Ryan was at first, the more richer business man. But Fontaine eventually got the support of most of the citizens by supplying them with ADAM. Eventually, Andrew Ryan, the man who built the city, and said no man can control the great chain, became tyrannical. He used his power to take down Fontaine and his men. Power was restored to Andrew Ryan. But under his new, totalitarian rule, the poorer citizens of Rapture suffered.
That's where the story of Atlas begins. He helped out the poor and needy. He became a hero in Rapture. That's where Rapture began to break down. Ryan supplied his citizens with a lot of ADAM. That made them very powerful but also drove them insane.
It is apparent that Andrew Ryan is power hungry and almost evil with his views on how man should live. With almost no compassion and no sign of humanity left.
You uncover this backstory by listening to audiologs left behind by the citizens of Rapture before they went mad.
With the help of Atlas, and a german scientist named Tenanbaum(who's only interest is saving the Little Sisters), you reach Andrew Ryan's office. He does not attempt to fight you. Instead, he gives a speech on the difference between a man and a slave. A man chooses, a slave obeys. He opens the door to his office and asks you to come in.
It turns out Frank Fontaine never really died. He just went into hiding. Instead, he created a new character for himself : Atlas! Just so he could seize control of Rapture!
That's not the end of the game. It end with you killing Fontaine and either saving all the little Sisters (thus finding salvation even though you aren't a natural human being) or you going power hungry and hijacking a nuclear submarine.
Awesome stuff. play this game. Then play Bioshock 2. Then watch Bioshock the movie.
