And I'm not even getting started. Dead Space is dead scary.
I've played F.E.A.R and Doom3 both without using cheats. Both played by myself at night.
With the volume and graphics really high.
But neither of those games comes close to the sheer adrenaline rush Dead Space gives me.
So what's so scary?
1) This game looks better than most games that my PC can handle. Although the textures aren't as good as Call of Duty or anything, the glow, depth of field, shadows, and various shading elements are superb. The best part is, I can run it on MAX settings! I was surprised to say the least. My PC can barely do COD4 or COD5 on max, but Deed Space on max is smooth.

2)Slung-over-the-head camera view makes things really intense. And instead of illogical 'health bars' or 'ammo bars', there's is ABSOLUTELY nothing on your display but your character, his environment and the bad guys. So how does this work? Simple. This game is set in the future. And you play an engineer-miner. This mining suit has holographic displays And your suit has all the information you need. Your characters helmet will project an image of your inventory/map/objectives and both of you(your character seems like he's reading it as well) can browse. This makes things a little more scary, because you browse in real time, if you need to check an objective, there's no pause, you still walk around and such.

3)Monsters! Unlike F.E.A.R, the monsters in this game do real harm! And unlike any other shooter, you have to NOT shoot the head. I'm not kidding. These monsters are resurrected humans, so they're already dead. What you need to do is use your weapons to dismember limbs and stuff, to criple them. Once cripled, the monsters will die off. The boss battles are definately the coolest I've seen in anygame. There's no 'hack-n-slash' tactics here. You need to think through each one.

4)Bioshock was really good with it's atmospheric setting. Dead Space is even better. The spaceship is very believable and has tons of sci-fi gizmos and gadgets on board. Some areas of the space ship is breached and has either zero gravity or vacuum. Your suit has magnetic boots, so you can jump from surface to surface and an oxygen tank with a limited supply.
5)No cheap scares. Plain and simple. Doom3 was riddled with cheap scares. In Doom3, being afraid was tiresome. All you needed to do was know when a zombie would pop up behind you. F.E.A.R. was better at thrills. But Dead Space nails it. I actually shivered at one point. At one level, there was a loud noise that made me just shoot everywhere. Don't ask...
6)Dead Space has really cool guns and items. You're given a set of magnetic boots to go with your awesome R.I.G projection mining outfit, a statis module, which simulates anti-gravity on a monster or object for a few second, a kinetics module, which enables you to pull and push heavy objects and a ton of cool weapons. Most of these weapons are mining tools. Your basic(but essential) weapon is the plasma cutter. Which is supposed to be for cutting through rocks(the space ship is a mining ship). There are flame throwers, plasma rifles, line guns(upgraded plasma cutter), contact beam guns, and a whole lot more. Each weapon/module/suit function can be upgraded to suit what you need.

7)Puzzles in this game rival anything Prince of Persia has thrown at me in their last series. Dodging giant tentacles in a zero gravity area of the ship is sooooo coool!!
The best part is this game is really long. I've played through for 7 hours straight(last night) and another 2 hours just now, and I'm just over half way. Unlike Fallout3 and Oblivion, there's an actual ending and a genuine feel of progress. Unlike COD4/5 there's no quick way to finish this game. It's worth checking room-to-room for data and pick-ups. It's also has very solid build quality, I've had NO CRASHES at all! It should be able to run on any decent PC bought/upgraded around 2005/06 onwards.
What I don't like about this game is... wait lemme think... OK. There's no multiplayer. So the only way to play is alone. Which isn't entirely bad considering the way the game is structured. Also, game engine may be good, but it makes movement a LITTLE too stiff. The camera view point was hard to get used to at first, but eventually grew on me.
Buy this game.
If you dare
