Winner : Company of Heroes series
Shortlisted games : Dawn of War series
Command and Conquer Series
World in Conflict
Total War Series
Why it won : Revolutionary gameplay. No other RTS has anything THIS realistic. Both graphically and in the way it plays. You actually connect to your troops on the ground. It's really cool. And had awesome graphics too.

First Person Shooter
Winner : Call of Duty Series
Shortlisted games : Bioshock
Crysis
Brothers in Arms series
F.E.A.R series
Doom series
Why it won: No other FPS can drag you into the game like call of duty can. Unlike the others FPS' games that potray you as the main hero and make the story revolve around your character, Call of Duty makes you just a small part of a much bigger picture and does it flawlessly. Quite good graphics, but you can tell the developers did their best.

Modern Role Playing Game
Winner : Grand Theft Auto series
Shortlist : Nothing else
Why it won : There are MANY games that try out this genre. Among them are Scarface, The Godfather, Boiling Point, ans Just Cause. All of them failed SOOOO badly. GTA however has paved it's way, set standards and been just plain fun since the beginning. And with each new GTA game, you can be 110% sure it's gonna be better than the last. It even has genuinely good humor added in the mix. All in all, an extremely well done game series that has had crappy graphics till their most recent release, which got 10/10 for its review on Gamespot.com. And it used the biggest budget in gaming history to develop (100million Us dollars) and made 5 X that amount (which was also a gaming history record) in its first week of sales.

Stealth based Game
Winner : Splinter Cell Series
Shortlisted games : Thief series
Why it won : The game mechanics might be stiff and the glitches are always obvious, but this series has amazed me since I first played it back in 2002/03. A lot people I know, do not 'get' this game. I mean, the guy has a gun, why doesn't he shoot people. Well it's a stealth shooter and your a sort of spy. Your allowed to kill and use your gun, but thats not very advisable. Not only do you get bad mission ratings when you use your gun, but in recent Splinter Cell games, your actions have consequence. So leaving the corpes of a guard you just shot on the street will make your government lose trust in you. The graphics are great and the goggles are awesome.

Tactical Shooter
Winner : Rainbow 6 : Vegas 1, 2
Shortlisted games : SWAT 4
: Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter series
Why it won : I always hated tactical shooters. They were always frustrating, ugly, difficult to play, stiff and not as realistic as other shooters. But last year when I played Vegas 1, I was completely blown away. The graphics were drop dead beautiful. The gameplay was better than anything I'd ever seen, the main character had, well, character. It was just, something that should have been done a long time ago. Vegas 2 was just an extension of Vegas 1, but deserves some credit due to it's extreme customisation and a little better graphics.

Action/Adventure Game
Winner : Prince of Persia Series
Shortlisted games : Assassin's Creed
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
Why it won : I absolutely love this game. The first 2 were SSOOOOO good, that when the pirated version of the 3rd couldn't work, it was more than worth buying the original version. No other game can make you think on your feet, run on walls, solve fun puzzles, fight the dark side of yourself, be a sand monster, have multiple endings, genuinely like the main character, bless the creator of the game, travel through time, cry because of it's brilliant story, have the best combat system ever all in one package. Really beautiful but like a lot of games in this list, will not appeal to a lot of people due to its uniqueness.

Role Playing game
Winner : Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion
Shortlisted games : Fable
: Return of the King (game)
Why it won : This genre doesn't always make breakthroughs. But a handful that ditch the traditional dice rolling mechanism have. When I first tried Oblivion, I was just well, trying. But somehow the appeal of a GIGANTIC world grew on me. Just look at the picture below. You can aim at any direction, probably see a mountain in the distance, walk in that direction. In about 5 hours you would have reached the destination and along the way you would most probably have raided a dungeon, recovered an artifact, stumble upon a bandit camp, see a hunter hunting some deer, discovered a town, leveled up, be threatened by highway men. The list goes on. The developers of this game created a living, breathing universe just for this game. It's amazing. It also has very good graphics, endless possibilities, thousands of user created modifications available free, and just a ton of fun in it. Too bad theres no multiplayer and no memorable combat system.
